Muslims for Progressive Values

Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) is 501 (c) (3) founded in 2007. We believe Islam is inherently progressive, inclusive and egalitarian, an understanding rooted in the traditional Qur’anic ideals which informs the ten principles of MPV. In the short years since our inception, we have expanded to include chapters in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Ottawa and Toronto, Canada, as well as Paris, France. www.mpvusa.org

 MPV PROJECTS

Keep It Halal

We’ve seen the power of media. We've seen how a hate inspired video made in the U.S. can inflame the Muslim world waiting for an excuse to hate back. With "Keep It Halal" our goal is to defuse the level of distrust and misinformation with education, in simple digestible 2-5 minute segments on subjects such as Women’s rights, LGBT rights, the environment, governance and many other social and cultural issues that have corrupted the interpretation of Islam. We wish to inspire understanding and critical thinking in order for us to move peacefully forward for the good of humanity. Our topics will be thoroughly researched and in collaboration with artists and scholars.

About the MPV Anthology

"Progressive Muslim Identites - Personal Stories from the U.S. and Canada"

This book offers to answer the question often asked "where are the progressive Muslims?" Here progressive voices of gay, straight, black, white and brown Muslims from the United States and Canada narrate their personal stories. Their powerful voices highlight human dignity, freedom to choose how one lives out one’s faith and the inner strength it takes to live out those ideals.

The Literary Zikr Project

Lit - er - ar - y Zik - r: [lit-uh-rer-ee zi-k-ur]

1. (Verb) Actively remembering God by engaging and challenging the intellect.

2. (Noun) The belief that critical thinking is essential to spiritual development.

Literary Zikr is a website providing academic works of world-renowned scholars of Islam in simple and youth-friendly language. The goal of Literary Zikr is to bring together scholars of progressive Islamic thought and Muslim youth in search of answers in an effort to bridge the gap that often exists between theory and practice. By providing an alternative to the readily available fundamentalist interpretations that pervade the Internet, Literary Zikr demonstrates, among other things, that Islamic values are consonant with American values. The Literary Zikr project is accessible through our website:  www.mpvusa.org or
